Presentation: "Hadoop Overview for Big Data" by Dr Phil Shelley |
|
|
Abstract
Hadoop is a technology stack that has gained momentum over the past 24 months to a point of general adoption in some progressive larger Enterprises. Hadoop is a departure from traditional relational databases, with radically different approaches to infrastructure, data modeling, data storage, data formatting, queries and use-cases. Hadoop should not be compared to these traditional approaches to BI, but rather thought of as a toolset to unleash the massive potential to explore data in ways that have been previously impossible. With Hadoop, storage is orders of magnitude cheaper, large batch queries run many times faster and parallel processing is enabled automatically; at the same time other things we traditionally do in a data warehouse are impossible: These concepts will be explained. Getting started with Hadoop is not trivial however; there are approaches and services that will be discussed that are making Hadoop a powerful solution for medium and larger companies.
Objectives:
In this presentation, you will learn high-level concepts about:
1. What Hadoop is and is not
2. What Hadoop can be used for and why
3. How to get started with Hadoop
4. How to use Hadoop – Getting data in and out, running production workloads
